Personally, General I have to thank you for your marked kindness to me at River's Bridge, and for mention of me in your letter to Gen. Blair. These things have given to my affectionate remembrance of you a strength which will not be speedily impaired. An especial Providence seemed to guard my recovery, which is now so far advanced that at my own request I shall report for duty on the 1st prox. and at the same time commence experiments with an artificial leg. I have troubled you with a long letter, but I could not help saying this much.

I am General
Very respectfully
Your obedient servant
Wager Swayne
Brig. Gen. U.S. Vols.

Maj. Gen. O.O. Howard
