Headquarters Department of Washington,
22nd ARMY CORPS,
DISCHARGE OFFICE,
Washington, D.C., Sept 14th 1865.

General

I spoke to you some days ago in regard to a position in your Bureau, General Nichols also spoke to you in regard to the same thing.

My duties in this Office are diminishing to such an extent, that the Office will be broken up ere long, and independent of my desire to serve in your Bureau, I earnestly desire to remain in the Service. Before the breaking out of the Rebellion I had a good business, and was in comfortable circumstances, but during my absence every thing has been broken up, and all that I had made has been swallowed up, so that for the present, I have to look to a military life for the support of my wife and family.
