General,
In obedience to Special Order No 407 A.G.O. July 29th 1865 I have the honor to report to you for assignment to duty. 

I understand Col. Whittlesey has already made application to Dept. Hd. Qrs. for my assignment temporarily, with the understanding that his request would be granted.  

The result however has not been communicated to me.
