MW---Like the one at the Stuttgart that Le Corbusier and Mies did.

EM---Yes.

MW---But, this program was more independent.

EM---Yes.

MW---When the first eight architects were selected, [[strikethrough]] some of the people were not selected. [[/strikethrough]] many were passed over.

EM---I know, [[strikethrough]] well, I think that [[/strikethrough]] Schindler, for one, [[strikethrough]] would have tipped over the apple cart, as they say. He probably would not have done it, [[/strikethrough]] and Harris was not asked. They didn't go to John and say I have a house [[strikethrough]] here [[/strikethrough]] I would like to be a case study, [[strikethrough]] And that was the way it was done after the first eight. [[/strikethrough]] which others did. 

MW---Is that true?

EM---Yes. Simply because it was [[strikethrough]] going much [[/strikethrough]] continuing longer than they had [[strikethrough]] even intended, and then [[/strikethrough]] expected. I was happy that so many of them went to young architects. 

MW---You're talking about the second phase of the case study program after 1950's. Around 1950's, a lot of young architects came up to the scene, such as Craig Ellwood. 

EM---Yes, [[strikethrough]] now [[/strikethrough]] he was one. [[strikethrough]] But then [[/strikethrough]] he had done an apartment house that was very fine, steel framed, in Hollywood. [[strikethrough]] And so you knew what he would do, you can talk to someone and know what their aesthetic paramity is, can't you? I can't. [[/strikethrough]] Then Soriano [[strikethrough]] . Soriano was, he was of that first group, though. But he [[/strikethrough]] was invited to do the 1950 one. Then there was Ellwood, and Buff, Straub, and Hensman; they were young architects teaching at U.S.C. And then Pierre Koenig; Killingsworth was young, just out of the war. The thing [[strikethrough]] he [[/strikethrough]] the young architect [[strikethrough]] here [[/strikethrough]] wanted more than anything else in the 50's was to be published in Arts & Architecture— [[strikethrough]] or in [[/strikethrough]] even the late 40's.

MW---For example, in the case of Craig Ellwood, his house became a case study house because he got his commission and came to Entenza. 

EM---Yes. [[strikethrough]] However Entenza may have gone to him. He may have said, "Are you doing anything?" and that it's just as likely it happened that way of because there was a change and the world here of architects was always small ---[[strikethrough]] The world of good architects is small anywhere. Entenza knew Ellwood's work And then Pierre did his own house, and John Entenza published it.
