Dear Esther,

Is the worst now over - with the lecture over and an end in sight?
Maybe by the time this comes you will have sent off the final draft and will be going mad painting - or even contemplating a return to a story. I surely thought of you on Tuesday - hoping for very much of the best.

It is now four days in Paris - and already things seem to be accumulating. Walks are so wonderful - the first full day here - along the Quai, crossing the Cite, by the Louvre - taking a very uncertain zig-zag path to L'Opera - American Express. Then Place du Concord - the length of Champs Elysees to the Arch - veering around somehow to along Avenue President Wilare in tribute, down to Seine opposite Eiffel Tower - finally a Metro that crosses Seine giving such magnifent [[magnificent]] view of the river & the tower. Sounds rather crazy, but it would have been crazy to go underground - inspite of the cold. God, what other city could offer as many fantastic surprises around every corner. It is still all quite confusing - making N.Y. look little a small town in comparison - and as you say it [[strikethrough]] fe [[/strikethrough]] makes you feel all too clearly your own background - that mid-west nowhere in the midst of all this.
