part of a Fulbright 6 years ago. Also that far from Rue du Bonaparte - perhaps 3 from Deux Magots, and if I'd known then what has since been learned about the simplicity of getting here... and I can't help but feel how much better that would have been. Altho climbing the 375 steps us Notre Dame wasn't hard - it was just alone.

So many small isolated things stand out, don't they. A cart of 3 dead deer. And the other day - 2 days after running with that Spanaird whose looks I didn't like I saw him in the very same spot again - his French is so good I can't understand it. A violinist in the streets brings tears to your eyes with just something from Pier Gynt. And as you say the bridges - gilt baroque figures on some. Green bronzes on Notre Dame. Now, each day the haze is soup so Eiffel Tower unseen - but black winter tree silhouetts are strong. The Algerians have made Police quite nervous & they have sub-machine guns in front of stations. I wrote Hardy & Ruth about last Saturday night's student demonstrations & police whistle-siren - like an inhale & exhale that gives you the chills. So many people you fight for your place on pavement not to mention crossing streets and quite enough rambling. Can't believe the sales of paintings. Miss you terribly. Very much love.
