San Antonio College begins its fall semester with five new department chairmen.

Dr. Jerome Weynand, president of the San Antonio Union Junior College District, announces the appointments of Mel Casas as art chairman; Elizabeth Ann Culbertson, child development; Millard Brent, earth sciences; Marcia Epner, reading and Anselyn Marshall, sociology.

Casas, who is replacing James Wogstad, has taught art at San Antonio College for 15 years. In addition to his teaching duties, he has displayed his own work in more than 50 exhibits and shows across the country, and he reviews art books for Choice Magazine, a publication of the Association of College and Research libraries. He received his masters degree in fine arts from the University of the Americas in Mexico City.

Dr. Brent, who started teaching at San Antonio College in 1964, received his Ph. D. in geography from the University of Oklahoma. He replaces John Currie, former earth sciences chairman, who resigned to teach full time.

Dr. Epner, who follows Cathryn Moore as reading chairman, has taught at San Antonio College for nine years and earned her Ph. D. from the University of Texas in Austin. She wrote a textbook used in San Antonio College's reading curriculum, "Fundamental Facts for the Reading Instructor."

Culbertson, who has been teaching part-time evenings at San Antonio College, will replace Lucille Rochs as child development chairman after serving as director of early childhood education at Incarnate Word College. She went to Troy State University in Montgomery, Ala., to get her masters degree.

Dr. Marshall was named sociology chairman in March 1977 following the death of former chairman Ruel Palmer. She obtained her doctorate from University of Texas in Austin. Dr. Marshall is also a practicing clinical psychologist.
