MEL CASAS
from page 15
because he has reached a level of understanding that allows him to accept people in their own time and place of development.
ON THE SOUTHWEST: Long before the Sun Belt phenomena appeared on the scene, Mel Casas recognized that the Southwest was the place where America could discover itself. Culturally and linguistically he notes that there ahs been an ongoing struggle for over a century. Language for Casas is a very important subject. "Aesthetics is dependent on organized sound-words. (A) dominant language in a pluralistic society has the power to affect artistic realities." [Art of the Southwest...Art on the Border by Mel Casas).
Casas smiles when the issue of cultural conflict arises. "Anglos perceive Latinos as radical, yet in reality the Latino culture is one of the most conservative cultures in the world."
Language, culture, history, geography (southwest) are all part of Mel Casas, just as they are all a part of his art work.
ON MEL CASAS: Casas describes his own works as "visual puns". A viewer must link him/herself with the art statement and come up with a solution. "I find it extremely interesting because the viewer's solution to the visual statement reflects his/her own sense of worth, his/her sense of values and what he/she considers important."
Mel Casas challenges us through the sheer force of his art and personality to discard our old cliches, our complacent lifestyles, our possessiveness and seek a society that has a new ordering of priorities, where an individual can grow without the shackles of the materialistic imperative. "Just because I make more money than someone else doesn't make me any wiser, certainly not any happier." It is not really a realistic dream but then again Casas knows that full well. It is not his objective to lead but rather to dream of what can be, of what could be, of what should be.
On the wall of Casas' little cubbyhole at San Antonio College, is an original wall-poster by Casas himself which states:
ART
ART IS
ART IS ART
ART VALUES ART
ART EVALUATES ART
ART DEFINES CULTURE
ART DEFIES CULTURE
Mel Casas is an artist. He is a man who paints a landscape that portrays us at our best and at our worst. Mel Casas is a product of his own times and yet he dares to go beyond them, to stretch his dreams on canvas hoping to share them and yet unconcerned if no one does.
