"It's a long story," laughed her friend, as they came to the end of the school block and turned North.

"Carrie was the girl's name. One day she was so angry with her brother, that she could have rolled him out as a carpet and walked on him. Sam was always tattling and he was a horrible tease too. Carrie had to get even with him so that night after supper she sneaked out to the pump, when no one was noticing, and filled a big tub full of water. her friend next door helped to carry it to the steps leading to the front porch, where it was nice and dark. After everything was set, she called, 'Sam, Liz wants to see you at the front gate.' She knew that would make him come in a hurry as he was sweet on Liz. Then the girls beat it to the back of the house to listen for the splash.

"They heard it all right, but then all thunder broke loose. The minister who had entered the house, while Carrie was drawing the water, came out first, and not seeing half as well as Sam could, fell headlong into the pan of water.

"Everyone in Hogan's Patch was talking about it. Carrie got a spanking and her Pop said she could not go out to play for a week. But worse than that her Mom said she could not have a new Easter outfit. Now every girl in Hogen's Patch gets a new Easter dress or suit so that was the worse punishment of all.

"One week before Easter, Carrie was so worried over it, that she decided to try the spell. I think her grandmother had told her about it."
