As her eyes travelled around the cozy little room with its blue wallpaper, dotted with red parasols, she found many things to attract her. She counted forty-one books in her low white bookshelf and sixty-two parasols on the wall. She even found places on the world map near her chair.
Thirty minutes passed and then, before Christi opened the front door, Gigi heard her voice, singing a popular song, in her full church choir soprano voice, that always seemed a little out of place chirping jazz. The nurse passed the room and on into the kitchen, but returned, almost immediately, with an inquiring look on her chubby face.
"You didn't eat your cookies Pet, or drink your milk. What's wrong with you Gigi? Daydreaming again?" When Gigi did not answer, "Well, if you want to play a silence game, keep it up until dinner, and I'll have some peace for a change."
Christi returned to the kitchen, very much annoyed, and thinking that it served her right for taking a position where she had the care of a child, but in a little while, her anger passed and she was singing away once more.
Soon there was a noisy clatter coming from the kitchen and the little girl knew the dinner was being prepared.
"Would it be all right to read?" considered Gigi, "Would it break the spell to get up and choose a book? Oh Jeepers!" she sighed, "There are so many things I should have found out from Lillie Mae."
