Poor Gigi!
The frightened child told him, through her tears, how the whole idea began, the telephone conversation, how impolite she was to listen, Lillie Mae's wonderful idea and how it had caused Aunt Nancy to be ill.
"Gigi," he said gently, "My name is Bill. I was with your Daddy in Korea. I just came back yesterday, but I've been writing to your Aunt Nancy. Didn't she tell you? Your Daddy was always talking about you. I was his best friend."
As Aunt Nancy came into the room, Bill smiled up at her and continued, "And if your Aunt Nancy will allow me, I'd like to help take care of the two of you."
"Oh, you will?" smiled Gigi through her tears. She was up with a bound. "Excuse me!" she called as she ran from the room. They could hear her dialing the phone.
"Lillie Mae!" shouted Gigi, "It worked! It worked!"
