Mr. Sam Gilliam
1752 Lamont N.W.
Washington, D.C.

Dear Mr. Gilliam:

It is with considerable personal regret that I must advise you of our committee's decision to select Robert Reed for our "Four Artists" exhibit this Spring.

As you know, I was extremely enthusiastic about your work and hoped that this enthusiasm could be conveyed to and would be shared by the committee, but, for a number of reasons, which have nothing to do with your merit as an artist, the Fine Arts faculty members favored Mr. Reed, and since we strive to operate in a democratic fashion, no choice was left but to accept their wishes.

I enjoyed meeting you and your wife very much indeed, and especially appreciated seeing your work at the studio. I hope that at some point in the future we will still be able to hold an exhibit of your work here at Indiana University. I enclose the slides you so kindly sent me with thanks, and wish to express our gratitude for your hospitality and kindness to us.

Sincerely yours,
