CURRY, JOHN STEUART, Artist; born near Lunavant, Kans., Nov. 14, 1897; son of Smith and Margaret (Steuart) Curry; educated at Winchester High School; Kansas City Art Institute, 1916; Chicago Art Institute (worked with John Norton and Timmons); Geneva College, Beaver Falls, Pa., 1918; married Clara Derrick (died 1932); (2nd) Kathleen Gould Shepherd, 1934. Commenced illustrating in 1920. Exhibited "The Fence Builders" in the National Academy, 1925. Studied in Russian Academy of Basil Schoukhaeff, in Paris, 1926. Exhibited "Baptism in Kansas," Corcoran Gallery, Washington, D.C., 1928. Awarded second prize by Carnegie International for "Tornado." Art Teacher, Cooper Union, 1932-34; at Art Students' League, New York, 1932-36. "Artist in Residence," University of Wisconsin, since 1936. On jury of Carnegie International, 1935. Completed two murals for Department of Justice ("Westward Migration" and "Justice Defeating Mob Violence"), 1937; also murals for Department of Interior Building (new), Washington, D. C. and murals for: Kansas State Capitol; Law Building, University of Wisconsin; Biochemistry Building, University of Wisconsin; and First National Bank Building, Madison, Wis. Represented in: Metropolitan Museum; Whitney Museum of American Art, etc. Academician, National Academy; Member, National Institute of Arts and Letters.
