MEMORANDUM

To: Miss Helen Petersen, Secretary, NCAI

From: Walter J. Knodel, Area Placement & Relocation Officer

Subject: Tape Recordings

Inasmuch as I am leaving town this morning and will not be available to discuss the tape recordings with you, I am leaving the following information:

1. A total of eight 1200[[?]] tapes were recorded.

2. These tapes were recorded on a DuKane High Fidelity Tape Recorder at 3 3/4 speed. The DuKane recorder records on one-half portion of the 1/2" tape. After the first half has been recorded, the tape is removed from the take-up spool, turned over to the other side and placed on the supply spool and is recorded on the other half portion of the 1/4: tape. Each side of the tape represents approximately one hour's recording. Therefore, each complete spool of each individual tape represents a total of approximately two hours recording time.

3. Each tape is marked by number which indicates its portion of the series. The order that the tape is in at the present time is in proper order for playing not in sequence [[strikethrough ]] o f[[/strikethrough]] 1,3; 5,7; 9,11; 13 and 15. ^[[SEE ILLUSTRATION]]

4. Reference is made to tape No. 13. This tape is in part an exception to the details as outlined above in that this one-half portion of the total spool of tape was recorded at a speed of 7 1/2 or a total of 30 minutes rather than one hour. This was occasioned by a mechanical error. The Convention requested that I play back a tape furnished by one of the broadcasting studios. The tape in question furnished us was recorded at a speed of 7 1/2. Accordingly, I adjusted the machine to play back at this speed and I inadvertently neglected to change the speed when I resumed taking proceedings of the minutes. Most machines are interchangeable from 3 3/4 speed to 7 1/2 speed, and when this portion of the tape is played back, the machine will have to be adjusted accordingly. If this is not possible on the equipment you have available, you may take same to any dealer or concern doing this type of work and have this one-half portion of this tape copied at the 3 3/4 speed.
