I have read the statement made by S.J.W. [[Luckey?]] in regard to the Boy Griffin all of which I know to be true the boy was found with his feet frozen as stated and carried to the Court House, and upon consultation with resident union surgeons his feet was amputated by the Rebel Surgeon and at the time was properly cared for, and at the time was after his recovery and united some after he left here I never heard any one intimate but what the amputation was entirely necessary. On the retreat of the Rebels from this place the Boy was placed in the care of a Colored woman by the Rebel Surgeon and by her and others supported until he left here on the train
