The course of returning owners, at Port Royal, who have endeavored forcibly to eject from their houses parties who have purchased them under the Tax law, makes the island residents fearful that persons who visit them without written authority are endeavoring to get forcible possession.

Although many wild rumors find ready circulation, it is the fact that good order universally prevails on the islands, and that the freedmen are reasonable and law-abiding.

I am, General,
Very Respectfully
