statements and doubtless commend my procedure

The Freedmen in West Tenn are not doing as well as in other portions of the state. I am confident that my visit among them will produce favorable results. On Thanksgiving day I met and addressed a mass meeting of Freedmen and their former masters at La-Grange Tenn. There were a large number present from Nor'n Mississippi. I am sure that good will result from the correction of many false impressions at that meeting.

Many of the Freedmen present were resting under the impression that a division of the estates among them was soon to be made and that the object of my visit then was to assign them lands, teams tools &c. Many of the Whites had equally absurd notions touching the province and intentions of the Bureau.
