During my stay at Memphis and vicinity I received communications and visits from persons residing in Arkansas, Nor'n Mississippi and West Tennessee who expressed serious apprehensions of an up-rising or insurrection among the Freedmen about Christmas time. From all I could learn, and I made very thorough inquiry, I have not the least fear in the world of an insurrection among the Freedmen. The terrible bloody stories circulated by the Press are very fictitious. A colored man hunting squirrels in Nor'n. Mississippi was magnified into a thousand vicious negroes marching upon their old masters with bloody intent. I wish the white people of that region would behave as well as the poor, persecuted, lied-about Freedmen do.
