K 59 Bureau Refugees, Freedmen & Abandoned Lands, States of Kentucky, Tennessee and Nor. Alabama. Assistant Commissioner's Office, Nashville Tenn Dec 16th 1865 General I have the honor to enclose copy of communication from our Supt at La Grange Tenn. a point near the State line fifty miles from Memphis. I fear the Mississippi Militia will drive the Freedmen to deeds of violence. Is the President fully advised of the character of this Militia? The same kind of militia caused us a year of bloody strife in Missouri. I am sure that Mississippi would be better off with no troops - than with this class. I shall direct my sub-ordinates on the border [[strikethrough]] not [[/strikethrough]] to be governed by your telegram of the 30th Nov. addressed to Col Thomas.
