I have the honor to submit the following brief statement, for which I respectfully ask your kind attention. In May 1861 I joined the (1st Excelsior) 70th Regt. New York Vols. as Sergeant Major, was promoted 2nd Lieut. Sept. 1861, 1st Lieut. Jany 1st 1862. Appointed Regtl. Adjt. Sept. 1st 1862, and was constantly with the Regiment participating in all the Battles in which it was engaged, until that of Gettysburgh Pa. in this last engagement I was seriously wounded by a solid shot, killing my horse and tearing the calf of my right leg off, and permanently disabling me for future field service.

In March 1864, I was transferred and appointed 1st Lieutenant in the (Invalid Corps now) Vet. Res Corps.
