[[/strikethrough]] Assistant Commissioner's Office, Nashville Tenn Dec 22d 1865 General In acknowledgement and reply to your inquiring of 19th inst. touching my action in the Orphan Asylum case at Memphis I have the honor to state that Mrs Caufield issued her petition under a misapprehension. She understood that I was about to withdraw all aid from her Institution. Genl Dudley confused her somewhat. I am furnishing her rations medicines and medical attendance. I have aided her in securing a good building for her occupancy until Jany 1867. I have also advised her to make a vigorous effort to get her own denomination to adopt the Institution as theirs and care for it henceforth. She is pleased with the idea, and I doubt not will succeed. The Protestant Episcopal Church have withdrawn from the American
