You will please excuse me for taking the liberty of appealing to you in the following manner knowing the possition you occupy in the Nation and the estimation with whitch you are held by all classes. Your applicant is a Citizen of Massachusetts of the City of New Bedford has been in the Rebelion since 61 the first two years was an attendent if Federal Officers but when an opportunity offered itself for me to go as a Soldier I embraced it with alacrity and I went forth and served the Country untill the close of the strife. Major, what I want is a situation under your administration where I can be beneficial and at the same time improve myself intellectually. I have had but a limited opportunity for improvement but I think it I could get a position could improve myself much. My ambition for aspiration is great by my lot was cast on the lowest spoke of the Wheel of fortune being born in destitution in the state of Tennissee Oct the 4th 1844.
