Maj. Genl. O. O. Howard.
Com. of Freedmens Bureau.

Sir.
On the 14th inst. I had the honor to forward to you an application for appointment to the office of Agent of the Freedmens Bureau.
This application was approved and recommended by Maj. Genl. W. T. Sherman. I am very anxious to receive the appointment and would inquire whether my application. has been or is likely to be formally considered?
In view of my need of employment, and the expectation indulged of this application meeting with excess I trust in this instance you will furnish the desired information - even if it is not your custom to thus answer applicants.

I remain Very Respectfully
Your Obedient Servant
J. S. Lyon
