has a medical officer on duty, contracted with at $100.00 per month. The necessary thanks have been forwarded, but no reports have been rec'd as he has but first entered on his work. If it is the object of the Bureau to furnish all the medical care necessary there should be five or six more physicians employed; - the exact number I cannot give as it has been out of my power to visit the entire field.
I have issued a circular requiring the medical officers in employ of the Bureau, and the Sub. Commissioners to report to me the number of Refugees and Freedmen at their respective posts - entitled to the benefits - of the medical department of the Bureau but have not yet received said reports. When these are received any successor will be able to give the number of surgeons requisite - and the points - where it will be necessary to establish hospitals.
