There have also been two small private schools taught in Natches by colored women, one of whom is very well educated, and both make tolerable wages.

All these schools in Natches contain about 275 pupils.
An evening school in Corinth, by a colored man 70 "
One school, Jackson, by a white woman, 50 "
One at Vicksburg, by a colored woman, 50 "
Two at Meridian and one at Sauderdale
Springs, by colored teachers, 140 "
In all about 585 pupils

I have heard indefinite reports of several other attempts at teaching by colored persons, but nothing certain. These attempts, if they do nothing else, prove the desire of the people to be taught, and evince their willingness to expend money for instruction. I shall seek reports of all these efforts hereafter, so as to be able, if possible, to bring into one view all of the educational labor, by whatever agencies, that may be done among the colored people in the State.
