Another Orphan Asylum will soon be opened, by the Society of Friends, at Jackson. Provisional Governor Sharkey has kindly allotted a building to it.

Beside the schools that will be taught by Missionary teachers, some few places will probably be supplied by private parties. I have correspondence in progress regarding some such cases.

The colored people everywhere show a commendable willingness to support their own schools as far as they are able. Very few white communities are more zealous, or appreciate the advantages of education more highly. In Vicksburg, Natchez and Davis Bend the freed people have been induced to meet, discuss, agree to plans for raising money, and appoint Boards of School Directors to carry out their plans. They may not secure so much money as they expect; but they will succeed so far as materially to aid those who send their teachers. In some other places similar efforts, in different forms, are being
