After I became satisfied that the  Captain was unlawfully detained, I sent the following despatch to Governor Sharkey.

"Vicksburg Miss., Oct 21. 1865.

Hon W.L. Sharkey,
Provisional Governor,
Who ordered the arrest of Capt. Warren Peck at Hazlehurst, and his confinement in jail?
(sig) Saml Thomas, Colonel & Assistant Commissioner"

I at the same time ordered an officer to call on the Governor and ask for his release. The following is the Governor's answer:
