Upon the return of Capt. Peck from a short absence at Vicksburg, he was met by the Sheriff with a warrant embodying an affidavit something to the effect of the above statement, for his arrest. That night_18th inst_the sheriff with a posse of armed men arrested him and carried him forcibly to Gallatin and confined him in jail. They proceeded to trial as soon as they could bring up the witnesses, but he would not answer the charges, protesting against the authority of the arrest; and in default of giving bonds for two thousand dollars for appearance in court was remanded to jail where he is now.
