It was amusing to see his endeavor to compute the amount due for 9 cords of woods "How much is twice nine?" said he, when he found that amount, he asked and "how much is 9 halves?" This was told him and then "how much is 18 and 4 1/2" Thus we learned that the price of his wood was $2.50 a cord and that he sold nine cords. How easy to deceive these poor ignorant people and to defraud them! and yet with all their ignorance, they betray no little shrewdness at a bargain. He said however that they were to have had a share of the cotton crop which the overflow destroyed and as they made no cotton they no wages.
