Beloit, Wis. Jan 1st 1866.
To Maj. Genl. Howard
Chief of Freedman's Bureau
Sir; I have the honor to request an appointment at your hands to a position in the Freedmans Department. I have been so long in the Army, engaged in the "pursuit of arms" that I find some difficulty in adapting myself to business pursuits in the manner which I desire.
I have served in Louisiana nearly all the time since May 1st 1862 - when New Orleans was captured until the Spring of 1865. I am therefore well acquainted with the System of Labor adopted in that State.
My pursuits heretofore have been about as follows, viz:
I graduated at Beloit College. Wis. in 1858. After two years study of the Law, I was admitted to practice upon examination in the Circuit and Supreme Courts of Wisconsin in the Winter of 1861. In April of 1861, I raised a Company and was Elected Captain Co. E 4th. Wis. Civly. I was promoted Major Aug. 186[[?]] - Let. Col. June 1864 - Col. June 1863. I resigned last October to attend to business which required my personal attention.
