The work of Mel Casas will be on display at the Beverly Gordon Gallery, 2404 Cedar Springs, Suite 100, Dallas, from May 7 through June 10.

As an outspoken social commentary painter of the 60's and 70's, Casas has documented the concerns of the times on canvases measuring 72"x96". Frequent subjects of his work were the migrant farmworker's plight, the Vietnam war, the feminist movement, and the Chicano condition in the United States.

In his latest paintings, the 59 year old Casas has drawn on his academic career, home-spun wisdom, and street-wise humor to present a series of refurbished visual cliches of the Southwest.

In revitalizing these folk-like icons, Casas is attempting to make them more artistically valid. Casas has always been the proverbial game player, word against image, in order to make us look at ourselves. Now he is gently pushing us to look at the Southwest symbolism he reveals through his works.

The Beverly Gordon Gallery is open to the public from 10-6, Tuesday-Friday, Saturday 11-5. For further information, please call (214)880-9600.
