In the latter part of 1967 a small group of artists assembled in San Antonio to participate in an idea about art. Through the direction provided by Felipe Reyes from Galerias Almazan, the beginning of a dream was created.

Due to a series of lectures given by Reyes a new flurry of works by the artists was spawned where upon the works produced gave the artists an identity as a group, the artists called themselves "El Grupo." As the characteristics of their identity changed it was mirrored by the changes of the title of the group. Los Pintores de Aztlan and Los Pintores de La Nueva Raza are names which reflect the search for a meaningful identity.

The group in its membership expanded from five to twenty-three to the present ten. Thus, these ten artists through a committment [[commitment]] to quality in their work, whatever quality may be, wrought forth the present form of Con Safo as a testament about art in the Southwest. Que viva el arte de nuestra linda Raza. c/s
