Those things are so direct & fresh - And then there is a superb Renoir show - all canvases after 1900 -- Superb. not too red -- & there you have the freshness & the decision of early American, plus the mist of genius - Really a thrilling show - The clarity of design, the spotting of lights The right there quality, with an amazing fluidity of whole. A big nude - not a hard edge - & yet an absolutely cut out pattern - & pearls - It set me thinking & made me disgusted with myself. And this morning Schwartz came - He said my color gooey - he meant too mixed -  not pure enough - liked best of all the direct study of the horses picnic -. His criticism very intelligent -  too much black in studio picture - also he thought sentiment blocked me
