it is I think his pleasure in all the things that make the whole - it is the anecdotal.  Each thing is beautifully put in - & holds its place - yet - the lack is there - it is decentralized - They are not pictures - they are superb anecdotes superbly rendered. If he gets through this phase to the proper choice - he has a tremendous instrument with which to play - but I think he never will - I think he will be a somebody - but they lack - well I don't seem to be able to put any finger on what it is - It is perhaps that he just cannot choose. He sees too well - too much - . Thus far he is saved by tremendous facility - & a very real phsycological understanding of types. Oh well - what matter - he is trying to do a big job - on big canvasses - & is succeeding to an amazing degree. Each thing has too much in it - I go & marvel - & am excited by the touches - the real local feeling - but then I think of the completeness - the quiet whole that it should have been  - I shouldn't crab - it is a real effort he is making - II Letters by Robert
