3 August - 56

Dear Clem -

Before I got here, after Munich & Vienna I was thinking that Rubens had it all over everybody once & for all & I was becoming a Rembrandt sneerer. Even Titian, on the whole, couldn't match Rubens. But now, I have to change my statement. This show today has been the highspot of the trip (how many times have I said that since June 1?)---In Amer. we don't see the right pictures. My god---what painting. I think I've gotten a real eye for Remb. you know, the things that usually bother me about him are the spot-light dramatic focuses --parts of the pic. light, the rest in pitch holes. But when it works, it works, & those holes don't matter. The late brushy pictures are magic. Don't go so much for the earlier clearly defined pics that lack juice & feeling. Here in Amster. everyone talks like Bill de K. & Nanno de G. Maybe that's why I feel at home! Will go to Haarlem, Hague, Rott. before returning to Paris. This has been a strange trip - good & bad. Hope you & Jenny are enjoying Easthampton. Are you painting? love to all, Helen.
