Cowherd by Water

Pissarro was always a politically & humanly conscious man & very strong in his convictions. But he was alsoban artist of such taste & wisdom that he never made any overt propaganda, no direct literary statement, in his work. His philosophy is the overtone of his work.

An avowed anarchist, Pissarro found it best to leave France for a short while in 1894. Anarchism in Pissarro wasxakin to the revolt in Blake. It was based on thatcsanctity of the individual & to him anarchy meant not only that freedom of the individual but with the freedom a high sense of responsibility & self-discipline. A person as beautifully integrated as Pissarro could well afford to be an anarchist.
