BLACKSIDE

Dr. Jeff Donaldson
504 T Street, NW
Washington, DC 20001-1811

Dear Dr. Donaldson:

I hope I didn't bother you at home the other day - I didn't realize your office could transfer calls right to your house. I believe you already spoke with Tanayi Seabrook, who is working on the third two-hour night of Blackside's I'LL MAKE ME A WORLD series. I am working on the second of the three evenings of the series, which covers the time period from approximately 1935 to 1965, and includes a story about Augusta Savage and her role in the Harlem artistic community during the Depression. I've enclosed a list of questions that I would like to ask you in connection with my show. In general, I am trying to get an accurate picture of the events that happened in this community during the 1930s, and Ms. Savage's role in them.

Also, we would love to interview you on-camera for our series, both as an artist central to the events during our final evening and as a scholar of those during our second night. If you can participate, we are beginning to schedule interviews, and I would like to find out about your availability for a film interview sometime in October.

Finally, we would very much like to read your dissertation Generation "306" - Harlem, NY to help us figure out the history of this complicated and somewhat under-researched time. I understand that it is currently restricted, and was wondering if it would be possible to read a copy of it?

Please let me know when would be the best time for me to speak with you about these questions. You can reach me at 617-867-4049, or by email at Katy_Mostoller@blackside.com. Thank you for your time, and I look forward to speaking with you soon.

Very truly,
Katy Mostoller
