Dear Ms. Mitchell,

Earlier this year, Mr. and Mrs. John Marin, Jr. gave to the National Gallery of Art a large group of John Marin's work to establish a John Marin Archive here in Washington. Stimulated by this project, I am working to produce a monograph on the artist as well as an exhibition to be held at the National Gallery next year, and am eager to see as many of Marin's works in all media as I possibly can.

I would very much like to see John Marin's watercolor [underline] A Street Seeing [underline] (Sheldon Reich catalogue raisonné number 28.2) in the Tremaine Collection. I understand that Mrs. Tremaine has been in a convalescent home and therefore am writing at the suggestion of Sarah Tanguy to ask for your assistance.

As I am travelling, I will ask my assistant Ben Glenn to follow this letter with a telephone call to discuss the possibility of your arranging a time for me to see the picture, which I understand is in New York City. I would be very grateful to both you and the Tremaines for the opportunity to examine [underline] A Street Seeing [underline].

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Sincerely yours,

Ruth Fine
