THE REV. WILLIAM M. WEBER, Vicar

29 October 1953
College of Preachers

Mr. Ad Reinhardt
7 Washington Place
New York City

Dear Mr. Reinhardt,

I want to thank you for 7a-1953 in the current show at the Whitney.

The panel gave me a strange experience of infinity. Approaching it from a distance, more of those side-rectangles come into view. Standing fairly close to it, I had the impression which I have only gotten otherwise from the blue field of stained glass and the bowl of the sky.

Then the extreme simplicity of it struck me; you were getting a perception of space with the fewest possible means. Certainly a plain blue panel would not have worked so on me.

The friend who was with me saw this, too, when it was pointed out to her, though she had passed by when she had first seen the painting.

This seems to indicate experiments on the frontier of optics, with an eye similar to Goethe's, who tried working in optics. I found myself hoping that you may also be experimenting with the dynamic live light of stained glass.

In any case, my thanks. One who spends his time in the White Mountains, with little chance to see this sort of things, is most grateful for your labors,

Sincerely yours,

William M. Weber
