Dear Miss Parsons:

The person whose name appears above has applied for a staff position on ships sailing to Europe this summer, and has given your name as reference. In making selections among applicants for those positions, we rely heavily on personal estimates of each candidate's qualifications.

As you perhaps know, the Council on Student Travel has been sponsoring student ships with shipboard orientation programs since 1947. This year we are placing educational and recreational personnel on ships carrying American tourists and European migrants, as well as students. Accordingly, staff will be chosen on the basis of their effectiveness with each of these passenger groups.

Purpose of the shipboard program is to prepare passengers for their travel to foreign countries, and to make their voyage as enjoyable as possible, through a wide variety of educational and recreational activities. We have a statement of the applicant's vocational experience and academic background. His success with the passengers, and with other staff members, will depend on his competence in the particular area in which he is applying, as well as his ability to work easily within a total shipboard program, enlist the participation of the passengers in his own program, and deal resourcefully with the varied problems which arise in a shipboard community.

I hope the enclosed sheet is brief enough for you to fill it out immediately and send it to us by return mail. Your evaluation will, of course, be kept confidential.

We appreciate your assistance very much.

Cordially yours,

COUNCIL ON STUDENT TRAVEL
