New York, New York

Dear Mrs. Koppelman:

The Institute of Contemporary Art has been asked by the United States Information Agency to prepare the American contingent for an International Religious Biennale opening in Salzburg, Austria this July. After this initial showing the American section is to travel under U.S. I. A. auspices to European museums until it returns in the fall of 1959.

The show which we were charged to prepare is to be small in size, comprehensive in scope, and of the highest artistic quality since it must compete with the best shown by other nations.

We feel that the painting of a cross ("Untitled") 1955 30x30 by Ad Reinhardt is an example meeting those requirements and wonder whether we may approach you for a loan. All those concerned are well aware of the difficulties of such an international undertaking and particularly of the need to borrow for an extended period. We hope, however, that the importance of the occasion will justify your favorable consideration.

Since we have a short time for preparation only, may we have your permission to view the work in context with the show as it now stands for purposed of final selection.

Transportation arrangements have been made for the Boston Truck Company to pick up the painting on Monday, June 2. If, for any reason, this is not possible, please call us to collect.

Sincerely yours,

Thomas M. Messer
