Mr. Stephen D. Paine
330 Beason Street
Boston 16, Massachusetts

Dear Mr. Paine:

I am sorry that you are upset. I wish that I could share your view of the situation.

I did not "offer" you anything. I sent you photographs of Cornell collages that were for sale. It has always been my habit to send photographs when requested, "subject to prior sale". Perhaps I was at fault in not stating this policy clearly, since we have never had any business dealings.

As I mentioned in our telephone conversation, a Museum curator was in that Saturday afternoon. He looked at all the available collages, and chose two to be sent for consideration as possible purchases. One is obliged to honor such reservations, simply because curators do not have the "power of the purse" and, therefore, must arrange approval by trustees.

Please be assured that if the museum does not decide to buy La Physique, we will let you know at the first opportunity.

Sincerely,

Robert Schoelkopf
