Flushing 58, New York

Dear Joseph Cornell:

Here are the lists prepared by Miss Oppenheimer of the collages we have or have had and sold. As you will see by the second page of the list of collages sold, Mr. Joseph Hirshhorn decided to acquire six collages. Five were priced at $1000 each, and one at $900. After much haggling, I allowed him twenty (20) per-cent off, which comes to the arbitrary amount of $4720. This discount is based on the reasoning that Mr. Hirshhorn is, in this case, a wholesale buyer!

Mr. Lerner, the Curator of the Hirsshorn collection and the soon-to-be Director of the Hirshhorn Museum (part of the Smithsonian in Washington) was particularly delighted. He says that he plans to have a "Cornell Room" specially installed in the new museum. It will contain some boxes which they already own, together with these collages.

Hirshhorn does beat prices down, but he will pay fairly promptly.

Enclosed is a review from a Bronx local newspaper. What is one to make of Glenway Wescott's remark?

Regards,

Robert Schoelkopf
