Joseph Cornell at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Among the forty collages selected by Mr. Geldzahler for this exhibition is a series entitled Investigations into a Penny Arcade of which the focal point is copper pennies intricately woven into the artist's premise. These have an affinity to the Tarot cards, for like the Tarot they tell a story that each individual can interpret differently.

These collages represent Cornell's work during the years 1966-68. They are a physical departure from the original concept of box and object painting. However, the language and metaphor, which Mr. Cornell has so aptly employed, does not diminish in communicative terms. The continuity of this personal alphabet, creating optical poetry, is a personal view into an even more personal vision of the artist's creative existence. The collages contain a statement of visual organization that is entirely fresh and yet corresponds to what is intended in poetry. (Dec. 10-Jan. 27, 1971)-S.S
