Dear Sirs:-

I have a customer for a Joseph Cormell construction which I bought at his first show in the Charles Egan Gallery in 1949 - possible 1950.

I paid $350.00 for this very beautiful work, entitle "THE CAGE", and signed with the artists name and the year of the work on the back of the shadow-box.

Both Robert Motherwell and Bradley Tomlin and I went to the show and they helped me make my decision.

"THE CAGE" is quite different from most of Mr. Cornell's works in that it is a rectangle divided into three sections by wires and by slender wooden bars which make a nice pattern of shadows. In each compartment there is a colored clay ball which seems to return quite miraculously to its place no matter how they may have been moved.

Will you please tell me the present value of this piece? I enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope for your convenience.

Very sincerely yours

Lynne Thompson
