Dear Edward

Began letter in Dortretch to you but did not finish, I stayed there two nights and wanted to sketch and do the old houses and canals, but dear me luck would have it, it rained and so I did best I could, getting wet ad everything else. I shall go down again, it only takes an hour in carriage. I walked home in rain and wind and together with parcels felt quite blown to pieces when I arrived here. In the hotel where we stayed, got room at artist's price, it was a fine large room - and there were lady as well as men artist in house - some spoke French, but think they were not the true true frenchy kind. I could understand them too well I think. I am going to stay here while others are in mountains

Since I wrote you last we have been on trips. The first was to Amsterdam, where we spent night and saw all the very fine pictures. They are fine those old masters. The next day we went to Marken - a fishing village where people dress very queerly - women short skirts and gay waists, five caps and two long curls on each side - not pretty. men bloomers miles wide soft hats and Sundays I think some wear high hats whether the younger ones wear that too I do not know, it looks very funny.

Saturday a week ago we went to Rotterdam took boat down canal to Delft a very pretty trip - went to factory which was interesting and saw them work - came home in evening. The days are so long that one forgets what time it really is, it is very nice in country but in town I dont care so much for it. I am
