585 JR: Will you feel badly in FAF when we're all celebrating Deaf Culture and sign language?
TF: No, I think it's fantastic. [part unintelligible here]
TF goes on to talk about hearing people who say sometimes he's lucky to be deaf: " I tell them, 'Simply get a pencil and puncture your ears.'"
623 JR: But it doesn't bother you to be in the Festival here? What about the questions you'll get about being an oralist?
632 TF: I'm not a pure oralist. But I'm an advocate of an oral education. I think sign language is a necessity as a means to an end [discussion of how to sign this phrase; TF keeps signing "MEAN" as in "meaning"]. For me, sign language wasn't necessary in education, but for most deaf people it is. (676)
677 discussion of whether TF would use interpreter or mike at FAF.
[tape runs out; later discussion was about signing with and without voice]
