of Athena and the temple of Sounion.
EY: But there is a certain narrative quality to your work.
MM: Not according to me there isn't, but that's [[crossed out]]like[[/crossed out]] what I mean by a secondary [[crossed out]]modia.[[/crossed out]] reaction. I can say afterwards and I did feel it at some stages, that [[crossed out]]I had[[/crossed out]] there was [[crossed out]]extracted from me against my will, because I hate to make state-ments.[[/crossed out]] 'content'. I really made [[crossed out]]them[[/crossed out]] statements [[crossed out]]sometimes[[/crossed out]] basically, and I never said this to anyone before, for [[crossed out]]really[[crossed out]] self-serving purposes. Everyone else does it and I thought [[crossed out]]like[[/crossed out]] the way things had been going which is not too terrific in terms of myself or career. (Does everyone else use vile language?)
EY: Dirty words? By all means.
MM: Since everyone else is shooting the shit, I might as well join the crowd but on my own terms. I'm not saving anything I don't mean but [[crossed out]]this is[[/crossed out]] definitely a secondary [[crossed out]]thing[[/crossed out]] meaning that happened well into the painting. The choice is made on [[crossed out]]the[[/crossed out]] a purely visual emotional basis. These two photographs struck me. I put them together into a printing and if anything occurred to me after-words, it was long afterwards. Maybe not when the painting was finished but certainly it was far enough under way for me not to worry that I was going to push it. (the meaning) I don't want to push an idea.
EY: Well, I still can't see where - I understand what you're [[crossed out]]-I understand what you're[[/crossed out]] saying but I still can't see where its just a formal thing to you, I think it appears -
MM: In otherwords, you think I'm lying.
EY: Well,
MM: You're an art historian, right?
EY: No.
MM: Ah, hr! Then you have no excuse.
EY: Well, you deal with this specific subject matter.
MM: Because at that point that's what interested me. At this particular moment it does not interest me so I have to [[crossed out]]sort of in that case[[/crossed out]] throw myself [[crossed out]]back into like [[/crossed out]] back six years ago to when I did it.
EY: What are you working on?
MM: Not much. So this is [[crossed out]]kind of[[/crossed out]] a bad time because I barely feel like printing. Seeing the show made me feel better. It also made me depressed, because I don't know if I'll ever paint
