MARCIA MARCUS

The first public exhibition in which I participated was at the Hudson Guild and I won a prize for sculpture. In 1951 I exhibited a painting and some ink drawings at the Roko Gallery and thereafter at numerous coop and commercial galleries. In 1957 I joined the March Gallery on 10th St. where I had my first one person exhibit. In 1960 I was included in Young American Painters at the Whitney Museum and thereafter exhibited mainly in commercial galleries. In 1962 I received a Fullbright award to France and lived there until the summer or 1963. In 1964 I received the Hinda Rosenthal award, given through the American Academy of Arts and Letters and also had a painting purchased through that organization. That same year I won an Ingram-Merrill grant, and also received that grant for 1977 and 1982.

In 1966 I received a Ford Foundation Residency to the Rhode Island School of Design Museum. Both before and after that I have been a visiting artist at many colleges and universities

In the early years I worked as a secretary, until 1958. Beginning in late 1959 I was self-supporting thru the sale of work but both the fact that I worked slowly and prices were low never allowed me to save very much for the future during the time of my greatest sucess, a short period indeed.

Since 1972 I have survived basically through teaching and some sales and a very few grants. More recently I worked as a substitute in the public school system but recent cutbacks do not bode will for the future and other possibilities for work are even worse since my office skills are limited. I am, however attempting to find some kind of work cince my extreme efforts in the past year to teach at the college level have been unsuccessful.
