BECAUSE ANOTHER NEEDS WILL WRITE.

Don't be puzzled at the above — it is an old joke of mine that somebody has worked off on me in the shape of an Xmas present of note-paper. 

Your welcome New Year's wire came and today a letter — thanks for both. I am sorry you seem not to be easy in your mind about Hunter. 

Violet in a recent letter says he was so sick at Hill, and that they played chess and got on so well - I divined, though she didn't, that the [[manner?]] who was there for everybody! who was really an inspiration for Guillaume - and I take my hat off - I hope she has got to Tunis safely by this time - She wrote me of her perplexities about Conrad - what a pity the boy does not show some obvious bent in one direction. it is time he does-
